Misc. Notes
John Sheehy was christened on 5 May 1850 at Coolcappagh and Kilcolman Parish, Duncaha, Co Limerick, Ireland; Maria Sheehy Matrina, was the only sponsor. My Irish researcher thinks that Matrina possibly means Godmother.1
He was the son of William Sheehy and Mary Connors.
John Sheehy sponsored the christening of Ellen Pierce on 12 November 1862 at Coolcappagh and Kilcolman; the joint baptism sponsors were uncle John Sheehy #1001 and aunt Bridget (spelt Brigid in the register) Sheehy #993.1

John Sheehy sponsored the christening of Patrick Shine on 23 December 1866 at Shanagolden Parish (St Senans), Shanagolden, Co Limerick, Ireland; the exact relationship between the family and the baptism sponsors, Catherine Sheehy #3015 and John Sheehy #1001, is unknown but it is assumed they are closely related.2

John Sheehy sponsored the christening of Henry Shine on 1 January 1873 at Shanagolden Parish (St Senans), Shanagolden, Co Limerick, Ireland; The exact relationship between the family and the baptism sponsors, John Sheehy #1001 and Johanna Sheehy #996, is unknown but it is assumed they are very closely related.2

Research Notes:
Nothing is known about this John Sheehy but Terry Shine (West Australia) and Marlee Creaser (USA) said a John Sheehy b.1834 came to Australia in 1862. I checked the shipping records for Victoria and found that a John Sheehy, age 28, travelled to Melbourne on the Great Australia arriving in September 1862. Unfortunately the dates don't tally up. John Sheehy born 21 Oct 1832 is assumed to have died before 1850 and John Sheehy born 5 May 1850 would have only been eleven years old. Also, a John Sheehy is a sponsor in Kilcolman Parish after 1862, 1866 and 1873.

In November 1862 John Sheehy #1001 and Bridget (Mrs Thomas Gaynor) #993 were joint sponsors at the christening of Ellen Pierce #1066. Also, in Decrmbet1866 John Sheehy #1001 and Catherine Sheehy #3015 were joint sponsors at the christening of Patrick Shine #322. In January 1873 he and Johanna Sheehy #996 jointly sponsored the baptism of Henry Shine #596. The exact relationship between the sponsors and the principals cannot be verified but it is assumed they were closely related.

In Ireland if a child died, it was common to name a later child by the same given name, particularly if the deceased child had been named after a grandparent. If there are two children both named John -- and this is possible -- then more research is required

New shipping intelligence received April 2004 from David Bedford :
Whilst searching the passenger list for the Auckland, departed Glasgow in 1875 bound for New Zealand, David not only found his ancestor, Thomas Nestor, but also noticed a John Sheehy, aged 23. Both were listed as native of Limerick. Although there is a small age discrepancy, it is quite possible that he is the John Sheehy born 5 May 1850.
